Thomas McCombie 1819-1869 An Early Melbourne Writer

Thomas McCombie was a Scotsman who came to Australia in the very early days of the Colonies and made a substantial contribution to Australian Literature. He was born in Tillyfour in Aberdeenshire in Scotland in 1819 and so he was only 22 years old when he arrived in Australia. He actually arrived in the new settlement of Port Phillip in early 1841 and like many young men on arrival he went out into the country to try his hand as a grazier. At this time Melbourne and Port Phillip was part of new South Wales and his earliest experiences were in country New South Wales. This is probably the reason why his novel Arabin is set in country New South Wales although it was probably set in what later became the State of Victoria. The life of a Grazier did not suit the young man from Scotland and he returned to Melbourne to make his home in that brash infant town.  Read more>>

Jackson Clements Burrows Punch Lane Wine Bar Street Canopies Sumo Visual Digital Printed Graphics

Al fresco dining has become an inherent part of the infamous Melbourne cafe culture, but is too often defined by rows of removable and unsightly umbrellas and protection barriers plastered with garish company logos. For this well-established restaurant along Little Bourke Street, Jackson Clements Burrows looked for something a little tastier. Rather than employing an impermeable barricade, they used an open steel structure with a translucent yet vibrant screen stretched over it. The overhead awning is retractable, its arms acting like a tree, keeping the tension of the leaf-printed fabric skin, and creating an abstract foliage canopy. In keeping with the seasons, the digital printed graphics from Sumo Visual are inteded to change, matching the changing nature of the streetscape.

There are a number of parks named Batman Park but the best known is the Batman Park below the railway bridge near the corner of Clarendon and Flinders Streets.

Connected to the Enterprize Park, Batman Park was named after the founder of Melbourne the explorer John Batman. Melbourne narrowly escaped being named after him - Batmania was once considered as a possible name for the village on the Yarra.

The park lies beside the river near what is fast becoming the convention centre of Melbourne. It provides a green resting place for visitors and workers in the World Congress Centre, Casino and Exhibition Centre.

The Jam Factory is a shopping and entertainment centre, located in cosmopolitan Chapel Street, South Yarra, (a suburb of Melbourne, Australia).

History: The Jam Factory is a well known location in Melbourne, deriving from its historical legacy.  From 1858 Victoria Brewery was located on the site. Robert Wright and Robert Payne bought the building and land in 1876 and started the Victoria Preserving Company. By 1880, under the name of the 'Red Cross' preserving company, it was employing 230 people at the height of the fruit season, being the largest employer in Prahran. Mr William Peacock bought the premises and turned it into the 'OK' Jam Co in 1895 and resold it to Henry Jones of the Henry Jones Limited company and the Henry Jones IXL household brand name. Jam production continued in the building for this firm until 1970.

At a cost of $20 million the site was redeveloped and opened on 9 October 1979 as a shopping centre catering to modern fashions.

Chapel Street was named after the first church in Prahran, an Independent (or Congregational) Church, built 100 metres north of Malvern Road on the east side, between 1850 and 1852. The first minister of “The Chapel”, as it was known locally, was Rev William Moss. In an address to the Collins Street Independent Church in 1888 the Rev. Moss said, "I may mention that our chapel at Prahran was the only place of worship in the district for over two years, and ultimately gave to the business street of that flourishing city its name Chapel Street". The Chapel was closed in 1859, used as a school building until about 1883, when it was demolished. The only surviving church in the commercial part of Chapel Street, the Baptist Church, which was built in the 1850’s on the corner of Wilson Street, is now the Irish theme pub Bridie O'Reilly’s.
