Melbourne General Post Office
(Source Wikipedia:) "The Melbourne General Post Office or GPO, is a landmark building in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Bourke Street in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. The foundation stone was laid in 1859 and was later extended in 1887 with a larger clock tower, extra storeys and applied with a Second Empire styled mansard roofline. The interior sorting hall was redesigned between 1907 and 1919.
In 1992, the GPO ceased to function as an office of Australia Post. A planning application for an upmarket shopping mall was approved.
A hotel development with thirteen-storey hotel was proposed, but never eventuated.
The hall was gutted by fire in 2001. The building was restored as a retail centre in 2004. Plans to complete the building were shelved in favour of a modern extension on the northern side.
It opened for business as a new upmarket retail centre in 2005, the building now forming a major arcade running from Bourke Street through to Little Bourke Street". I love historic architect. There is not much in Qld, tho. Or, am I being ignorant..?
It's one of my wishlists that someone will come with wheelchair and take me out for museum tour, then have a nice cappuccino at somewhere like GPO.
It's really great photo. I'm assuming it's your art.
Hey, Rach – if I was living in QLD, I’d be your girl! Nothing I’d like better than to have a friend that would have the patience to ‘sit’ while I happily snapped away, at least 10 shots for every scene. Having a cappuccino at each new location is an absolute ‘prerequisite’. Ah .. the civilised life!
It’s funny; how I was thinking about you on the way into work today. Must’ve been some telepathic waves gently caressing us.
Thanks for the comment about the photo. If the photos are mine, I tag them and/or the post with ‘my photos’. The mock-ups sans frame have my signatures on them too - if you click on pic, to get to photo section, then click again for full view, you should be able to see it (although I haven’t done this on a lot of my initial photos I uploaded when first starting this blog. I really should go back and detail that).
Unfortunately making this modification, including saving it as a smaller photo, sacrifices the clarity and resolution. The photo may be better viewed upon enlargement, but it will also show up the imperfections in this quick and easy edit. I figure that people should be able to get enough of the ‘idea’ of the shot though of those that I personally would like to print and frame for myself.
One day I would love to be able to take, and, afford a photography course, and, have more equipment at my disposal, including a great ‘film’ camera. Right now, I’m just having fun happily snapping away, without hardly even knowing all the menu settings on the camera – except my saving ‘grace’ which is the blessed hand-shake reduction button!
Hope you feelin’ ok Rach. For now, can you pretend we go for ‘espresso’ and often. Big smiles at you hun.
